A short history of Poringland
Poringland was once also called East Poringland and Great Poringland and it lay within the ancient Hundred of Henstead. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Porringhelanda, a name whose meaning is uncertain. One belief links it to poor spring land, since the soil holds a great deal of clay. All Saints church is one of 124 surviving round-tower churches in Norfolk. The painter John Crome, founder of the Norwich School of artists, is tied to the village through his well-known painting The Poringland Oak, which now hangs at Tate Britain. Within 0.6 miles of the centre stand seven Grade II listed buildings, including the guardhouse, a pillbox and the Chain Home transmitter tower at the former RAF Stoke Holy Cross.
