A short history of Tamworth

Fragments of Roman building material found near Bolebridge Street show early activity here. Angles later settled beside the River Tame, from which the town takes its name. They called their fortified estate Tomtun. By the seventh century Tamworth was a royal vill and towards the end of the 8th century it received defences of earth and timber. King Offa issued a land grant in 781 from his palace at Tamworthie. Æthelflæd died here on 6 June 918. In the early 10th century the town was divided between Staffordshire and Warwickshire. In 926 a sister of King Æthelstan married Sitric Cáech in the church and a mint struck silver coins. After 939 Viking invaders devastated the town, which never regained its royal standing. The castle dates from the 12th century. In 1889 the town was placed wholly in Staffordshire. Of 137 listed buildings nearby, the Church of St Editha, Tamworth Castle and the Causeway Walls are Grade I.
