A short history of Rugeley

The Domesday Book of 1086 includes Rugeley, which was formerly called Rudgeley or Ridgeley, a name thought to refer to a ridge and a field. In the mediaeval period the town worked iron and made glass. Richard I sold it to the Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry in 1189 and by 1259 it held a weekly market. The Chetwynd family inherited the manor in 1532 and kept it until 1764. A fire and a flood from the Rising Brook struck in 1709, some sixty years after an earlier fire. Thomas Anson received the manor in 1768. The Trent and Mersey Canal and then the railway aided the economy and the horse and livestock fairs peaked in the mid 19th century. Lea Hall Colliery opened in July 1960 and with the Rugeley power stations it drove fast growth in the 1960s. Of 33 listed buildings near the centre the Church of St Augustine of Canterbury and Brindley Bank Pumping Station are Grade II*.
