A short history of Spalding

Excavations at Wygate Park show that people were living around Spalding by the Roman period at the latest, when the coastal siltland here was used to make salt. The work seems to have stopped by the mid-7th century BC, possibly because climate change and flooding made it hard to continue. The name comes from the Spaldingas, an Anglian tribe who settled in the 6th century. They may have remained self-governing as part of Mercia until the late 9th century. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Spallinge in the hundred of Elloe, with 91 households and three holders: Crowland Abbey, Ivo Tallboys and Guy of Craon. Ivo Tallboys held the largest share, including 6 fisheries and 2 salthouses. Around 5,000 evacuated children arrived in 1939. Two serious air raids followed on 12 May 1941 and 2 August 1942. Of 130 listed buildings, Spalding War Memorial, Ayscoughfee Hall and the Parish Church of St Mary and St Nicholas are Grade I.
