In 913 the Mercian ruler Æthelflæd founded a fortified settlement there, one of several she established while fighting the Danes and the town became county town of Staffordshire soon afterwards. A mint was established under King Æthelstan and continued until the reign of Henry II. A rebellion against the Norman Conquest ended in the Battle of Stafford, after which much of the town lay abandoned. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded it as partially waste, with almost a third of its messuages uninhabited. Robert de Stafford raised the first castle on a hilltop to the west and the town was walled by 1086. Medieval Stafford traded in cloth and wool and shoemakers formed a guild in 1476. The Ancient High House was built in 1595 and hosted Charles I in 1642. The area has 142 listed buildings, with the Church of St Mary the only Grade I.
