A short history of West Bridgford
Around 919 to 924, Edward the Elder had defences and houses raised near the southern end of Trent Bridge to shield Nottingham and its surroundings from Danish raids. A survey from his reign suggests a population of 192, with 19 of them farmers. The Domesday survey of 1086 recorded the village as Brigeforde, part of the Manor of Clifton. The Musters family gained the estate by winning a game of cards in 1523. The village grew from small beginnings in the mid-19th century and wealthy Nottingham merchants bought property there. After the First World War the Musters family sold the Trent Bridge Inn and cricket ground to the county cricket club. Under pressure they also sold land for building, subject to strict planning rules on a grid of tree-lined roads. Bombing in the Second World War killed 40 people. There are 24 listed buildings within a mile of the centre, including the Test Match Hotel at Grade II*, while Old Trent Bridge is a scheduled monument.
