The name Heanor comes from Old English words meaning a place at the high ridge. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Hainoure, in a joint entry with Codnor, Langley and Smithycote. Eight thegns held seven carucates before 1066. The entry lists three ploughs in demesne, eleven villagers, two bordars and three sokemen with five and a half ploughs, a church, a mill, meadow and woodland pasture. Its value fell from £4 to 41s 4d and Warner held it. St Mary's church was later described as very old. The Market Place took shape on part of Heanor Hall's park in the 1890s after the Miller Mundy family of Shipley Hall broke up the estate. Nine listed buildings stand near the centre, with the Church of St Lawrence at Grade II*.
