A short history of Eastwood

The name Eastwood joins an Old English word for east to an Old Norse word for a meadow or clearing and may point to a Viking-age clearing in Sherwood Forest. Domesday Book records the place as Estewic, in the holding of William Peverel. Ulfketel had held four bovates, the land was waste and Peverel had charge of it, with woodland pasture listed. Under King Edward it was valued at five shillings. William Peverel the Younger forfeited the estate to the Crown in 1155 and much of the land passed to the Greys of Codnor Castle. The Erewash Canal opened in 1779 and coal mining expanded. A meeting at the Sun Inn, built in 1750, led in 1832 to the Midland Counties Railway. Moorgreen Colliery opened in 1868 and D. H. Lawrence was born in 1885. The last local coal mine closed in 1985. Fourteen buildings are listed, all Grade II.
