A short history of Werrington

Werrington stood on a hilltop as little more than a windmill and a few nearby houses. The mill is believed to date from 1730 and a map of 1749 recorded the village as Wherington, with the spelling Werrington not adopted until 1890. When advertised for sale in 1804 the mill had four pairs of stones. It later ground coal for briquettes and by 1905 it supported a small turbine that supplied electricity to the neighbouring public house. The home guard made it their headquarters during World War II and the Midlands Electricity Board bought it in 1952. It is the last windmill left in the Staffordshire Moorlands. Rapid growth began in 1925, when the Meigh family sold the Ash Hall estate and services arrived. Housing spread into Washerwall, Withystakes, Ash Bank, Armshead, Cellarhead and parts of Wetley Common, adding some 2,500 homes. Two Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
