A short history of Hucknall
The Church of St Mary Magdalene has Anglo-Saxon origins and was finished after the Norman Conquest. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Hochenale. Earlier forms of the name, Hokeuhale and Hokenale, point to a nook of land linked to a tribe called Hōcanere. From 1295 until 1915 the town was called Hucknall Torkard, after Torcard, a dominant landowning family. The church's top tower stage and south porch date from the 14th century, a south aisle was added in 1872 and long transepts followed in 1887. It is Grade II* listed and nine other listed buildings, all Grade II, stand within a mile of the centre. Coal mining in the Leen Valley across the 19th and 20th centuries brought wealth and three railway lines, the Great Central line opening in 1899. Hucknall Urban District Council governed the town from 1894 until 1974, when Ashfield took over local government.
