A short history of Calverton

Traces of two Roman marching camps lie to the north-east of the crossroads of Oxton Road and Whinbush Lane, a smaller one of about four acres within a larger one of about twenty-six acres. Roman coin hoards were uncovered in the parish in 1959 and about 1960 and a lead figurine of a seated woman was also found. The Domesday survey of 1086 records the place as Calvretone, with its land divided between the Archbishop of York, Roger of Poitou and Aelfric of Colwick, a thegn. The archbishop's share was an outlying estate of Blidworth and included a church and priest. The name is thought to mean a farm associated with calves and a record of 1275 gives it as Kalvirton. For much of its history the village lay within the forest area of Thorney Wood Chase, where handicrafts such as stocking knitting mattered. Parliamentary enclosure came in 1780 and a colliery opened in 1952. Of 14 listed buildings near the centre the Church of St Wilfrid is Grade II*.
