A short history of Crewe

The name Crewe comes from an Old Welsh word meaning weir or crossing. The Domesday Book records it as Creu. The original settlement lay east of the present town as a township in the parish of Barthomley and was renamed Crewe Green in 1984. The modern town began when the Grand Junction Railway opened a station in 1837 in fields near Crewe Hall. The company built locomotive works north of the station and in 1840 Joseph Locke drew up plans for a new town to the north-west, which the company largely built in the 1840s and 1850s. Population reached 40,000 by 1871. Queen's Park was laid out by Francis Webb. On 29 August 1940 a raid destroyed about 50 houses near the station. Of 36 listed buildings nearby, West End has the highest grade at Grade II*.
