A short history of Winsford
The origin of the name Winsford is not certain, though it may join the personal name Wain or Wynne to a word for a place to cross the River Weaver. The Norman Earls of Chester kept a hunting lodge at Darnhall in Over parish. In 1270 the Cistercians received the estate from Henry III and in 1274 they built Darnhall Abbey. In 1280 Edward I authorised a market and annual fair at Over for the Abbot of Vale Royal Abbey. The monks left Darnhall for Vale Royal in 1281. Improvements to the Weaver approved in 1721 let sea-going vessels from Liverpool reach the town. From the 1830s salt working brought factories and a new town around Wharton, built largely in timber frame because of subsidence. Winsford Urban District Council formed in 1894. Overspill housing for Liverpool followed in the late 1960s and 1970s. Of 22 listed buildings nearby the Church of St Chad is Grade II* and the other 21 are Grade II.
