A short history of Clowne

Human bones from the early Neolithic have been found in caves in the nearby Markland Grips and a Bronze Age fortification and a Roman fort also stood close by. The name comes from Clun, a Celtic word for a river and the spelling reached its present form in the 1920s. The manor was first recorded in 1002 under Wulfric Spot. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists Clune under Robert of Barlborough with 27.3 households and also refers to Ernui. The church of St John the Baptist was built in the 12th century. In 1485 the manor was linked with Bolsover and later passed to the Cavendish and Bentinck families. Plague struck in 1586 and 1606. Southgate Colliery was sunk in 1877 and drew in workers from elsewhere. The old school followed in 1895 and the High Street in 1901. The pit closed in 1929 after flooding. Six listed buildings stand near the centre, with the church and Clowne Cross both Grade II*.
