Ellesmere Port itself began later, where the Ellesmere Canal was to meet the Mersey. The canal's northern end was built in Whitby rather than Netherpool and the settlement beside the basin was known at first as both Ellesmere Port and Whitby Locks. The stretch to the Dee at Chester opened in 1795. The first homes clustered by the docks along Dock Street and Station Road later linked them to Whitby. The Manchester Ship Canal opened in 1894. Burnell's Iron Works arrived at the end of the nineteenth century and in 1905 the Wolverhampton Corrugated Iron Company founded the Mersey Ironworks, with workers housed in a new village named Wolverham. Stanlow Oil Refinery followed in the 1920s and Vauxhall Motors opened in 1962.
