A short history of Frodsham
Frodsham Hill carries the outline of an Iron Age promontory fort and the town itself is of Saxon origin. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Frotesham, held by Hugh Lupus, Earl of Chester, with 13 households and 9 ploughlands. It was valued at £4 and noted as waste when the Earl acquired it. A church is also mentioned there and the nave of St Laurence's still shows evidence of a 12th century building. The origin of the name is not clear. Early in the 13th century Frodsham was given borough status, probably by Earl Ranulf III. Its position where the River Weaver meets the Mersey made it a port that exported Cheshire salt. The fortified stone manor house in Castle Park was called a castellum in an account of 1315. Forty-eight listed buildings stand near the centre, including the Grade I church and the Grade II* Old Vicarage.
