A short history of Worksop

Worksop lay within an Anglo-Saxon area called Bernetseatte and its name probably comes from an Old English personal name joined to a word for valley. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Werchesope. Before the Conquest Elsi, whose father was Caschin, owned two manors there. It then passed to Roger de Busli and its value had risen from three pounds to seven. William de Lovetot built a castle and founded Worksop Priory around 1103. A skirmish called the Battle of Worksop occurred in 1460. The priory closed in 1539 and Mary, Queen of Scots was held at Worksop Manor in 1568. By 1674 Worksop was the fourth-largest settlement in Nottinghamshire. The Chesterfield Canal arrived in 1777 and the railway in 1849 and coal beneath the town added to growth. Near the centre are 76 listed buildings, with the priory church and Priory Gatehouse graded I.
