A short history of Bowdon
The name Bowdon comes from Anglo-Saxon words meaning bow hill or curved hill. Domesday Book mentions Bowdon with a church and a mill and records neighbouring Dunham Massey as Doneham, held by Hamo de Mascy. Watch Hill Castle, a timber castle on the boundary of the two places, was built some time after the Conquest and was out of use by the 13th century. In 1644 about 10,000 of Prince Rupert's troops camped on the Downs. Through marrying Lady Mary Booth, the Earl of Stamford gained the Booth lands in 1750. Landowners began selling land for housing in the 1840s and a railway station opened in 1849. Large houses stood on Green Walk by the 1860s and 1870s and mains water arrived in 1864. There are 26 listed buildings near the centre, including two at Grade II*: the Church of St Mary the Virgin and Denzell House.
