A short history of Reddish
The name Reddish was recorded as Redich in 1205 and 1212 and refers to a ditch, possibly the Nico Ditch. The place is absent from the Domesday survey. The Reddish family held land from at least 1212 until 1613, when it went to the Coke family through marriage. Reddish Hall was demolished in 1780. The Stockport Branch Canal opened in 1797. Late in the 1700s Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester, sold his land and Robert Hyde Greg and John Greg bought it in 1808. They opened Albert Mills in 1845. By 1857 the area was almost entirely agricultural but the population rose over tenfold in fifty years as mills such as Reddish Mill (1864) opened. The cotton mills closed between 1958 and 1982. Twelve listed buildings stand near the centre, led by the Grade I Church of St Elisabeth.
