A short history of Urmston
Fragments of Roman pottery found in 1986 where Urmston Old Hall once stood suggest there may have been a settlement on the site in Roman times. After the Norman Conquest William the Conqueror gave the land between the Mersey and the Ribble to his kinsman Roger de Poictou and part of it passed to Albert de Greslet. Towards the end of the 12th century Orme Fitz Seward received land from Albert de Greslet and the name Urmston probably comes from his dwelling. In the 13th century that land passed to Richard de Trafford. Late in the 16th century the Old Hall was built again using timber and brick. Farming dominated until weaving grew in the early 19th century. The railway of 1873 turned the town into a middle class residence and the population rose from 996 in 1871 to 6,594 in 1901. Fourteen listed buildings lie near the centre, the highest graded being the Church of St Michael at Grade II*.
