A collegiate church, established by Thomas de la Warre by 1421, later became the cathedral. Chetham's Library opened in 1653 and the Bridgewater Canal in 1761. Manchester gained city status in 1853 and the Ship Canal opened in 1894. Of 836 listed buildings nearby, 14 are Grade I, including Ordsall Hall and Manchester Art Gallery.
