A short history of Stocksbridge

Until the early 18th century the valley was wooded, with a few stone houses, hillside farms and an unmade road between Sheffield and Manchester. In 1716 John Stocks, a farmer and landowner, held a fulling mill midway along the valley and reputedly put a footbridge across the river. The place took its name from this crossing, shown as Stocks' Bridge on a map of 1772. In 1794 a cotton mill was built near the original mill. Floods destroyed the wooden bridge more than once before a stone one replaced it in 1812. A local board district was created in 1872 and St Matthias church was consecrated in 1890. The district became urban in 1894 and the Town Hall was built in 1928. Stocksbridge joined the City of Sheffield in 1974. Five Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre with a scheduled glass furnace at Bolsterstone.
