A short history of Doncaster
Doncaster grew from a Roman fort of the 1st century at a crossing of the River Don, called Danum in Roman records and the town later served as a staging post on a route between Lincoln and York. The present name developed in the Anglo-Saxon period, when it was a burh and it appears in a will of 1003. Soon after the Norman Conquest Nigel Fossard refortified the town. Domesday Book records Hexthorpe in the wapentake of Strafforth with a church and two mills, which are taken to represent the Doncaster settlement. Richard I granted a town charter in 1194 and a fire struck in 1204. A market charter followed in 1248. Franciscan friars arrived in 1307 and by 1334 the town was the wealthiest in southern Yorkshire. The Pilgrimage of Grace ended there in October 1536. The Mansion House and the Minster Church of St George are both Grade I listed among 114 listed buildings near the centre.
