A short history of Chadderton

The name Chadderton is thought to derive from Caderton, joining a Brythonic word for a fortified place or hill with the Old English ending for a settlement and it may date from the 7th century when Angles settled the region. The township does not appear in the Domesday survey of 1086. Its first written record is a land deal of about 1220 involving the Rector of Prestwich. Around 1235 Geoffrey de Trafford took the surname Chadderton, founding the Chadderton family of Chadderton Hall. Later lords included the Asshetons and Radclyffes. Farming and hand-loom weaving sustained the township until a water-powered cotton mill opened at Stock Brook in 1776. By 1914 the town had over 50 cotton mills. Of its 22 listed buildings Foxdenton Hall is Grade II* and the rest are Grade II.
