Remains of a Roman village and farm have been found on Nutwell Lane. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Ernulfestorp, probably the outlying farmstead of a man called Earnwulf or Arnulfr, with Old Scandinavian thorp showing Viking influence. The land belonged to Roche Abbey near Maltby, whose monks ran a grange there with a resident official and a forester. The parish covered 3,810 acres, included Holm-Wood farm and had mostly scattered houses. From the late 19th century a deep colliery named Markham Main was sunk and coal mining continued for most of the 20th century, bringing a sharp rise in population and new estates laid out in rings and crescents. The pit closed in 1996. The one listed building near the centre is the Grade II Church of St Mary.
