A short history of Farnworth

The name Farnworth comes from Old English words for fern and an enclosure. Spellings of Farneworth and Farnewrth date from 1278 and 1279 while a land survey of 1282 gives Ffornword. It began as a hamlet in Barton and during the 13th century the Lords of Barton and Manchester held it. Adam Lever, Richard Hulton and Richard Redford were tenants of the manor by 1320 and the Hultons of Over Hulton acquired it later. Tax was due on 91 hearths in 1666. The commons were enclosed in 1798. Coal mining drove fast growth through the 18th and 19th centuries alongside iron foundries and cotton mills. The Worsley Navigable Levels joined the collieries to the Bridgewater Canal. In 1821 T. B. Crompton, owner of the Farnworth paper mills, patented a continuous method of drying paper. The Halshaw Moor Wakes were first held in September 1827. Fourteen Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre, including Cobden Mill and the Carnegie Library.
