A short history of Barnsley
The name Barnsley comes from the Old English Beornslēah, meaning Beorn's wood or clearing. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Berneslai with around 200 people. Silkstone parish covered the settlement, which saw little growth until the 1150s, when it passed to Pontefract Priory. The monks built a new town where three routes met and the original village became Old Barnsley. A royal charter of 1249 allowed a weekly Wednesday market and a four-day Michaelmas fair. From the 17th century the town served as a stopping point between Leeds, Wakefield, Sheffield and London and became a linen-weaving centre. Municipal borough status came in 1869 and county borough status in 1913. In 1908 sixteen children died in a crush at a public hall now called The Civic. Of 71 listed buildings near the centre, the Monk Bretton Priory remains, gatehouse and administration building are Grade I.
