A short history of Brigg

Boats dating to around 900 BC and a late Bronze Age riverside causeway or jetty show that people used the Ancholme crossing here very early. In Anglo-Saxon times the area was called Glanford, though the origin of the first part of the name is unclear. A royal grant of 1205 gave Hugh Nevil a weekly market and yearly fair, reconfirmed to his son Ernisius in 1235. A new bridge replaced the ford around then and gave the town the second part of its name. Parliamentarian forces seized the Royalist garrison in 1643. Brigg was substantially improved and reconstructed from the late eighteenth century into the early nineteenth and the former town hall, today called the Buttercross, dates from 1817. Of 71 listed buildings, the Grammar School (Original Portion) is Grade I and The Exchange Club is Grade II*.
