The name Royton is Anglo-Saxon and may mean a rye farm or settlement. Domesday Book of 1086 does not mention it but a survey of 1212 records a manor of twelve oxgangs held by William Fitz William from King John. Around 1260 John de Byron bought most of it and the Byrons lived at Royton Hall until the early 17th century. His descendant, made Baron Byron of Rochdale by Charles I, lost his lands under Cromwell and Thomas Percival bought the hall. A chapel of ease was built in 1754 and Ralph Taylor built a water powered cotton mill at Thorp Clough in 1764. Residents numbered 260 in 1714 and 2,719 by 1810. Royton was a mill town by the mid-19th century and the last mill shut in 2002. Five listed buildings stand near the centre with the Church of St Anne at Grade II*.
