A short history of Grimsby

Archaeology points to a small settlement of Roman workers on a waterway flowing into the Humber in the 2nd century. Danes settled the place in the 9th century and folklore links the name to a fisherman called Grim, though historians treat the founding story in the Lay of Havelock the Dane as a myth. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Grimsby with around 200 people, a priest, a mill and a ferry. It grew in the 12th century into a fishing and trading port and received its charter from King John in 1201, with the first mayor installed in 1202. It had no walls but dug a defensive ditch and in medieval times its parish churches were dedicated to St Mary and St James, the latter now Grimsby Minster. In the 15th century the waterway silted up and stopped ships in the Humber from docking, so the town declined until dredging in the early 19th century, after which the port grew quickly. The railway arrived in 1848 and the first true fish dock opened in 1856. Of 105 listed buildings, Grimsby Minster and the churches of St Giles and St Michael are Grade I.
