A short history of Honley

A cairnfield in Hagg Wood, south east of Upper Hagg, is a scheduled monument close to the centre of Honley. The name probably comes from Old English, either from Hanalēah, meaning a wood or clearing associated with a cock or with a man called Hana or from hān, a word for stone that here would refer to a whetstone. The settlement once lay within the West Riding of Yorkshire. Within 0.8 miles of its centre there are 89 listed buildings, all of them Grade II.
