A short history of Meltham
The name Meltham probably comes from an Old English word for a smelters' village. The valley was inhabited from prehistoric times and two Iron Age sites overlook the town. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists Meltham in Yorkshire, within Agbrigg hundred, as a village that had been laid waste. Towards the end of the 18th century the Brook family moved to Thickhollins. Sons Jonas, James and Joseph founded a silk business at Meltham Mills that employed over 1,000 people in the late 19th century. The family built St James' Church, workers' housing, a convalescent home, Meltham Hall, Meltham Town Hall and Helme Church. The firm became United Threads in 1890 and closed in 1939, when David Brown Tractors took over the site until 1988. Thirty listed buildings stand near the centre, all Grade II.
