A short history of Horwich
The name Horwich comes from Old English words that refer to a grey wych elm and was recorded as Horewic in 1221. Albert de Gresle held the land between 1086 and 1100 and it became a hunting chase. In 1277 Robert Gresle prosecuted Martin de Rumworth for taking deer and in 1294 Thomas Gresle obtained free warren. Church lands were seized and sold under Henry VIII and farming replaced much of the woodland. The Andertons bought the manor in 1599 and the earliest map dates from 1620. The Crown confiscated their lands in 1715 and leased them to the Blundells. In the 1770s the Ridgway brothers moved their bleach works to Wallsuches and Horwich Vale Printworks was founded in 1799. After 1884 the railway works brought rapid population growth. Fifteen listed buildings near the centre are all Grade II.
