Coins, pottery and part of a silver statue of Victory indicate Roman occupation, with a small station supposed on the nearby Roman road. Place names reflect Anglo-Saxon settlement and Littleborough itself derives from Old English words meaning either a small fortified place or a small watercourse. In the Middle Ages it was a hamlet within Hundersfield manor and by 1472 it held a chapel, some cottages and an inn. By 1848 the town had flannel mills, cotton factories, bleachworks, coal pits, a quarry and brickmaking. The Littleborough Urban District was created in 1894.
