Huddersfield was a market town from Anglo-Saxon times and the Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Oderesfelt. It appears as Hudresfeld between 1121 and 1127 and as Huderesfeld in 1297. The de Lacy family held the manor on a long lease until the Crown took it back in 1322. William Ramsden bought it in 1599. The Ramsdens later had the Cloth Hall built in 1766 and the Broad Canal in 1780. Luddite attacks on mills followed and the mill-owner William Horsfall was killed in 1812. The Ramsdens backed the railway in the 1840s. In 1920 the corporation bought the estate for £1.3 million.
