A short history of Dewsbury

The name Dewsbury is generally taken to mean Dewi's fort. Legend says Paulinus, Bishop of York, preached beside the River Calder in 627. In 1086 the Domesday Book listed the settlement under the spellings Deusberie, Deusberia, Deusbereia or Deubire, placing it in Morley wapentake with nine households. A market for local clothiers began in the 14th century. Plague in 1593 and 1603 closed it and it reopened in 1741. The first Methodist Society formed in 1746 and a canal branch arrived in 1770. Dewsbury then became a centre of the shoddy and mungo trades and saw Luddite unrest and Chartist disturbances in 1838. Among 116 listed buildings Thornhill Lees Hall is Grade I, while Dewsbury Town Hall, the Church of All Saints and The Second Hall are Grade II*.
