A short history of Brighouse
The name Brighouse means "Bridge House" and derives from a building at or near the crossing of the River Calder. Early on it was a hamlet of neighbouring Rastrick. Snake Hill Ford is thought to have lain on a Roman road linking Wakefield with Manchester. A timber Rastrick Bridge was recorded in 1275 and another was built in 1514 using timber given by John Hanson. His son paid for a stone bridge in 1558. Work on the Calder and Hebble Navigation began in 1757 under John Smeaton and boosted industry alongside river powered flour milling and textile mills. The Halifax and Huddersfield Turnpike Act 1824 allowed Calder Bridge to be built and tolls ended there in 1875. Brighouse was incorporated in 1893. Of 63 listed buildings four are Grade II*: Church of St Matthew, the churchyard Cross Base, Giles House and 1 and 3, Upper Green Lane.
