A short history of Longton

Longton has origins far back in time. A document of 1153 refers to a priest named Eafward at Longton. During the Middle Ages monks of Penwortham Priory looked after land here, which gave the area a reputation as a holy place. They most likely founded the first chapel. Many documents from that period survive, chiefly about rent owed to the Shireburn family of Stonyhurst. An early source names a meadow called Tirolkar, which appears to correspond to the present Hallcar. A chapel of 1772 was demolished when St Andrew's church was completed in 1887. Nothing shows that the earliest chapel stood on the site of the present church. From 1894 until 1974 the parish formed part of Preston Rural District before becoming part of South Ribble. Two Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre: Banks Farmhouse and Balshaws Farmhouse.
