A short history of Accrington
The name Accrington first appears in records of the Parish of Whalley from 850 as Akeringastun and it possibly means acorn farmstead. During the 12th century Robert de Lacy passed the manor to Kirkstall monks. They built a grange and local people burned it down and killed the three lay brothers inside, which may explain the name Black Abbey. The manor soon returned to the de Lacys. Two townships, Old Accrington and New Accrington, were established in 1507 and merged in 1878. A chapel stood by 1553 and St James's Church replaced it in 1763. Until around 1830 visitors saw a considerable village, but mills from the mid-18th century brought rapid growth, with the population rising from 3,266 in 1811 to 45,029 in 1911. Nonconformist churches multiplied in the 19th century. Accrington Town Hall and Accrington War Memorial are both Grade II* among 29 listed buildings near the centre.
