A short history of Kingston upon Hull

The valley of the River Hull was settled from the first part of the Neolithic age, though little evidence points to a substantial community on the site of the present city. The site lay on the edge of the hamlet of Myton and was called Wyke. Late in the 12th century monks of Meaux Abbey established it as a port to export their wool. King Edward I acquired Wyke in 1293 and on 1 April 1299 granted a royal charter renaming it Kingston upon Hull. During the First War of Scottish Independence the port served Edward as a base and it went on to trade in wool, cloth, wine and timber. Sir William de la Pole was the first mayor and a further charter in 1440 set up local government under a mayor, a sheriff and twelve aldermen. Hull saw some of the first fighting of the English Civil Wars. William Wilberforce sat for the town in Parliament in the 18th century. There are 466 listed buildings, including the Grade I Wilberforce House Museum, Maisters House and the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity.
