A short history of Clayton-le-Moors

The town is thought to have formed from two hamlets, Oakenshaw and Enfield, which began to merge while the Leeds Liverpool Canal was being built. The canal reached Enfield Wharf from Burnley in 1801 and was extended to Church by 1808. The link between Leeds and Liverpool was completed in 1816. Cotton weaving and cloth finishing carried the merger further. In 1819 a Roman Catholic church, St Mary's, opened on Burnley Road by the Altham boundary to replace the chapel at Dunkenhalgh. All Saints' Church was erected in 1840. John Mercer, a self-taught chemist from Great Harwood who devised the mercerisation process, spent his later years at Oakenshaw Cottage. A new St Mary's was built in 1959 and the old church was demolished, leaving only its graveyard. Ice stopped the canal coal barges in the winter of 1963. Eight listed buildings stand near the centre, seven Grade II and Sparth Manor at Grade II*.
