Remains of an elk found at Carleton suggest people lived in the Fylde as long ago as 8,000 BC. Kirkham is pre-Roman in origin and a Roman fort stood on Carr Hill. The name joins the Danish word for church to an element meaning settlement. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Chicheham, on a Roman road running from Ribchester to the River Wyre. Kirkham stayed a small market town through the 15th and 16th centuries then grew as a textile centre from the late 17th century. Schoolmaster John Willacy found a Roman brass shield boss in the Dow Brook in 1792. Sailcloth was woven in cottages from 1830 and John Birley built the Flax Mill in 1861. Eleven mills once stood here and Progress Mill of 1915 was the last. Looms ran until 2003. Of 16 listed buildings near the centre the Church Of St Michael is Grade II* and the other 15 are Grade II.
