A short history of Sherburn in Elmet

A Roman road between Castleford and York ran along the limestone ridge where Sherburn stands, though Roman settlement itself has left few traces. The area belonged to the post-Roman kingdom of Elmet until Northumbria absorbed it in 616/7. After his victory at Brunanburh in 937 King Athelstan gave the Archbishops of York a high-status dwelling at Hall Garth beside All Saints' Church. The name was first recorded in 963 as Scyreburnan and comes from Old English words meaning bright and stream or spring. The Grade I listed church has features from about 1120 and stands on an earlier Anglo-Saxon church site. In 1645 Parliamentarians attacked Sherburn and defeated its Royalist garrison. Anthony Salvin restored the church's east end in 1857.
