A short history of Blackpool

An elk skeleton about 13,500 years old gives the earliest evidence of people on the Fylde. Some of the first villages that later became part of Blackpool were named in the Domesday Book of 1086. In medieval times the area was a few coastal farmsteads and its name came from a stream that carried water from Marton Mere and Marton Moss to the sea through peatland that darkened it. A baptismal register of 1602 first records the spelling Blackpoole. Sea bathing for health drew visitors from the mid-eighteenth century and several hotels stood there by 1781. A railway line arrived in 1846 and North Pier opened in 1863. Blackpool became a borough in 1876 and the Winter Gardens opened in 1878. Electric street lighting followed in 1879 and the tramway opened in 1885. Blackpool Tower dates from 1894. Of 25 listed buildings near the centre, Tower Buildings is Grade I. The Thanksgiving Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Grand Theatre and the Winter Gardens are Grade II*.
