A short history of Leeds
Late prehistoric enclosed settlements survive in Gipton Wood and a stone hut circle settlement lies in Clayton Wood. The name comes from an old Brittonic term meaning people of a rapidly flowing river, the Aire. It first applied to forest within the kingdom of Elmet, which lasted from the 5th century into the early 7th. Bede recorded the area as the region called Loidis. In 1207 Maurice Paynel, who was lord of the manor, issued a charter creating the Borough of Leeds across a small part of the manor near the river crossing. Leeds grew as a market town and a centre for woollen cloth and Charles I granted a charter of incorporation in 1626. The Aire and Calder Navigation was created in 1699 and by 1770 Leeds handled a sixth of England's export trade. Marshall's Mill dates from around 1790, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal from 1816 and the Leeds and Selby Railway from 1834. The Corn Exchange opened in 1864 and city status followed in 1893.
