A short history of Yeadon
The name derives from Old English terms for a steep hill. The Anglo-Saxons split the area into Yeadon and Nether Yeadon under Saxon lords. Once the Normans had conquered England the manors went to the House of Percy and the Meschines family and the Domesday Book gives the extent as four carucates, roughly 328 acres. Bolton Priory and Kirkstall Abbey later acquired much of the land. In 1354 the villagers prevailed in a legal dispute with Kirkstall Abbey about 300 acres of moorland. The two manors stayed separate until 1630. Residents began pressing for their own church in 1714 but none came until 1844. New Road was built through the town in 1827 and Yeadon was separated administratively from Guiseley in 1845. Four listed buildings, all Grade II, include Yeadon Town Hall and the Church of St Andrew.
