A short history of Tadcaster
The Romans founded a settlement at the Wharfe crossing on the road to York and called it Calcaria after the Latin word for lime. The place is first recorded as Táda in 1066, when King Harold gathered his army and fleet there before heading for York and Stamford Bridge. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists Tatecastre as two manors where Dunstan and Turchil had eight carucates. William de Percy built a castle there, reusing Roman stone and it was abandoned in the early 12th century. Around 1240 the first stone bridge was built and a market charter followed in 1270. The Battle of Tadcaster took place around the bridge on 7 December 1642. The present bridge dates from 1699 and John Carr doubled its width in 1791. Three Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
