A short history of York

York began in AD 71, when the Ninth Legion defeated the Brigantes and built a timber fortress above the Ouse close to where the Foss joins it, naming the place Eboracum. Later legions rebuilt the fortress walls in stone. Emperors including Hadrian and Severus held court there and Severus made it capital of Britannia Inferior between AD 207 and 211. Constantius I died in the city in AD 306 and his son Constantine was proclaimed emperor by the troops. Flooding and decline followed and the Angles settled it in the 5th century. A timber minster was built for the baptism of King Edwin in 627 and a stone replacement was left to his successor Oswald. Vikings captured the city in 866 and renamed it Jorvik, making it a trading centre and port. Eric Bloodaxe was driven out in AD 954. Today 65 listed buildings are Grade I, among them Cliffords Tower, parts of the city walls and the church of St Cuthbert.
