The area lay in the Royal Forest of Knaresborough, which Edward III granted in 1372 to his son John of Gaunt, making the Duchy of Lancaster the main landowner. In 1571 William Slingsby found a mineral spring at Tewit Well and Edmund Deane promoted the waters in a book of 1626. The spa declined after the First World War and government offices moved to the town's hotels during the Second World War. Of 159 listed buildings nearby, the Church of St Wilfrid is Grade I.
