A short history of Lancaster
A Roman fort was built on the hill above the River Lune by the end of the 1st century and rebuilt in stone around 102. It was remodelled in the 4th century and stayed in use until Roman rule ended. Little is recorded for the following centuries, though a monastery stood near the site of today's Priory by the 700s or 800s. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Loncastre, from the River Lune and an Old English word for a fort. William I held control of it at that time. Lancaster became a borough in 1193. The Scots burnt the town in 1322 and again in 1389 and John of Gaunt strengthened the Castle. The Pendle witch trials were held there in 1612. Buildings along St George's Quay date from the 1700s. City status came in 1937. Of 321 listed buildings near the centre, the Priory, the Castle, the Judges' Lodgings and the Ashton Memorial are Grade I.
